Aldershot
is a town in the English county of Hampshire, on a moorland 55 km (35 miles)
southwest of London, with a population of 33840 and is administered by Rushmoor
Borough Council.
Aldershot
benefits from excellent road and rail links. The A331 provides a dual
carriageway link to the North direct to J4 on the M3 and beyond to the M4,
whilst connecting to the A31 to the South giving a direct link to Guildford and
the A3, Farnham onto Winchester. The Main line rail Station runs direct to
London Waterloo, or Guildford onto Gatwick, or Basingstoke onto the West
Country.
Since 1854,
Aldershot has been the 'Home of the British Army' and will continue to be so.
However, the Army's needs have changed, which means they do not require all the
land they occupy.
Releasing some
of the land will enable Aldershot to grow for the first time in 70 years,
allowing it to compete with neighbouring towns that have not been restricted
and have been able to develop. This will give Aldershot the foundation to
further enhance the town by attracting new investors and retailers.
Working closely with Rushmoor Borough
Council and the Ministry of Defence, the Partnership is playing a vital role in
ensuring the new development is a seamless extension to Aldershot and doesn't
become a mini town between Aldershot and North Camp.
The area to be developed is north of
Aldershot town centre through to the Basingstoke Canal, and is set to provide
over 4,500 new homes, schools and places to work and socialise. The scheme will
reflect the town's heritage but allow a 21st century way of living.
