Alresford - Area Information

Alresford (pronounced Allsford) is conveniently situated on the A31 near Winchester and is a beautiful Georgian Town which for many centuries was a prosperous wool town.

Voted the most attractive market town in the south of England (and second in the whole of England) in the 2005 Country Life Market Towns competition. Alresford is famed throughout the country for its colourful Georgian architecture, open airy streets and quaint passageways and is set on the edge of the Alresford marshlands in the beautiful Upper Itchen Valley countryside approx 7 miles east of Winchester.

Alresford has a population of some 6,020 (Census 2001) Approximately 2,845 residents are in employment or self-employment. It is estimated that local businesses (including schools etc.) employ approximately 2,500, of whom perhaps 1,025 (41%) live within the Alresford area whilst 1,500 come from outside to work in the town. Some 1800 residents work outside the area.

Visit the specialist shops selling antiques, gifts, food, clothes for all ages, antiquarian books, pictures, china and crafts. With pubs, hotels, restaurants and tea rooms, your every need will be satisfied. And don't forget to visit the Watercress Line steam railway that runs from Alresford to Alton through 10 miles of beautiful Hampshire countryside.

TRAVELLING TO ALRESFORD: is easy via excellent road links and even a steam railway. The A31 provides a dual carriageway link to Winchester and J9 of the M3 within 6 miles, and east on to Guildford and M25 beyond.

BY STEAM RAILWAY: 10 miles from Alton Station. Tel: 01962 733810 for running times. There is a direct rail link to London Waterloo from Alton Station normally with at least one train per hour.

BY BUS: Regular services from Winchester, Southampton, Alton and Petersfield. Tel: 0870 608 2 608 for information or use the timetable look up. The Cango Bus now operates five days a week on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
